wildlife

I don’t really get camping. Never have, most likely never will. I’ve camped in the past, but only because I had to. I might be willing to try it again someday but I’m definitely not jumping at the chance.

Clay’s family, on the other hand, is all about it. They invited us up to their campsite this weekend to eat a Dutch oven dinner and roast Starbursts around the campfire. And, well…even with all of my anti-camping ways, I certainly can’t turn down some delicious roasted Starbursts.

We four-wheeled our way into the campsite. And yes, we're wearing sweatshirts. In July.

We saw wildlife. You know that saying, "It's more scared of you than you are of it"? I don't believe that. I don't believe it with spiders and I don't believe it with mountainous creatures. I was scared of the deer. And of the mountain lions that I'm positive were secretly hiding up in the trees waiting for the perfect moment to eat us. And the bears. I asked Clay a lot of questions about bears. Like, could a bear could outrun us if we were on the four-wheeler? Or, if I threw a big stick at a bear would it go away or would it get mad and chase me even faster? Clay was kind and assured me that we were safe. And then he told me to tap two sticks together as I walked around and it would scare away all the animals. Ah, if only.

Clay and Mikey shot BB guns. I don't do guns. Growing up, I was convinced that those Nintendo Duck Hunt guns could kill me, so anything remotely close to a real gun scares me silly. But I decided that living out here I would find myself in situations where I'd be around guns and that I needed to be smart around them instead of breaking down like a lunatic.
And so...

I shot a BB gun. It scared me, but I was comforted knowing that if I tripped (which is more than likely when I'm doing anything remotely dangerous or adventrous) or missed my target I couldn't kill anyone. I might add that I hit my target on the first try. Yeah, I shot it up real nice. But that doesn't mean I'm going to like shooting a real gun when that day finally comes.

But still, it was kind of cool. And I even felt a little bit country.

I love roasting starbursts! And you could totally outrun a bear on a four wheeler.

On Kelly and my first date I asked him if he rode bulls because thats what I thought people from the country did for fun!! I'm impressed at your great attitude and your willingness to try new things. Way to be.

I just read your last post...NO TARGET! I have been whining about the mall situation here, but at least there is one and Target & Walmart, guess I should be grateful! But your scenery is absolutely killer and I am a little envious that you are wearing sweatshirts in July!

I love the part about tapping two sticks together. That's how your parents do it, and look, there are no bears in Boise!

Tapping two sticks actually WORKS? I thought that was a prank the twins pulled in the old Parent Trap movie with the non-camping lady they didn't want to marry thier dad. Color me surprised (or you pranked?) :)
